Early life
Broderick Stephen Harvey was born on January 17, 1957, in Welch, West Virginia, to coal miner Jesse Harvey and Eloise Vera. He is the youngest of five children. His first name is Broderick, named after actor Broderick Crawford from the television series Highway Patrol. Harvey suffered from a severe stutter as a child but eventually overcame it.

Harvey’s teacher told his father that Harvey was an omniscient person. However, his father believed him. After Harvey achieved his dream, he gave the teacher a television every Christmas for the rest of her life. In January 2017, Harvey joked about Asian men to Steve Harvey, mocking the idea that a white or black woman would want to date such a man. He said, “Excuse me, do you like Asian men? No thanks.” Harvey added, “I don’t even like Chinese food.” The comments drew criticism from Asian-Americans, including New York City politician and Fresh Off the Boat author Eddie Huang. Huang called Harvey “hypocritical” for discussing the issues facing the black community while disparaging Asians. Harvey apologized on his talk show and on Twitter, saying,
